The NewLanders would like to thank the sponsors of our Song Catcher 250 Project.
SONG CATCHER PROJECT Thanks to all 13 of our sponsors, unfortunately Pittsburgh 250 did not see the value in our grant. An outline of the project proposal is provided below. We hope for better luck in 2058! Dear Friend: The Pittsburgh based musical group the NewLanders is seeking project partners to sponsor a series of community gatherings and concerts in 2008. The proposed mixed media events will celebrate the heritage of Southwestern Pennsylvania during the 250th Anniversary of the City of Pittsburgh. The NewLanders perform songs by and about the people of our region. The band is best known for its collaboration with the Westmoreland Museum of American Art on the “Born of Fire” exhibit, a multimedia project focusing on the area’s steel industry. The presentation included an art exhibit, a video documentary and concerts by the NewLanders featuring music from their “Born of Fire” companion CD. Past performances have included various radio appearances and a concert televised by the Pennsylvania Cable Network from the floor of the State House in Harrisburg. Recently the NewLanders returned from Europe where they performed at the Rhineland Industrial Museums in Oberhausen and Solingen, Germany. Additional information about the NewLanders may be found on our web site: www.newlanders.com. This is an invitation to join them in the celebration of our common history. Perhaps your institution will consider sponsoring the NewLanders by committing to provide a venue for a NewLanders Gathering in 2008. A typical gathering would consist of the following. Ø Engagement with local institutions and historical societies, along with the sponsor, to focus on a discussion of our regional music and its role in the expression, preservation and understanding of our heritage. Those attending will be encouraged to share their regional songs and lore. The NewLanders will moderate this discussion and record those who wish to make a musical contribution. Ø A refreshment break (e.g., pot luck) after the meeting to allow time for personal interaction. The less formal setting will provide for the continued exchange of stories and ideas on a more personal basis. Ø Finish the evening with the NewLanders Performance featuring songs and stories of Western Pennsylvania. Ø The NewLanders will create a web portal and a blog (or wiki) that will enable the community to further the discussion. This web portal will serve as a repository for the information collected from each event, and invite the sharing of new ideas. It will provide a point of connection for all NewLanders Gatherings. The web tools will also become a resource for continued discussion and dissemination of information about the regional music of southwestern Pennsylvania.
